In the season 4 finale of Gilmore Girls, Rory sleeps with her ex-boyfriend Dean. The problem? He’s married at the time this happens. This happens at the very end of the episode. So, to start season 5, Rory tries to talk to Dean and figure out what exactly is going on with him and his wife but instead, ends up sleeping with him AGAIN!! Rory goes to her friend Lane’s house for advice because she isn’t sure why she was able to ignore the fact that he is married and is ashamed to talk to Lorelai about it so she just avoids it. Lorelai is so upset by Rory doing this that when Emily (Lorelai’s mother) tells them that she is going to Europe for the summer, Lorelai says she thinks it will be a good idea for Rory to go with her. She reveals her motive is that she wants Rory to go to Europe and distance herself from Dean.
So, between the first episode of season 5 and the second episode, 7 weeks passes. Rory & Lorelai barely spoke during this entire time because of the awkwardness of the situation. In episode two, it is a few days before Rory is expected home from Europe and she calls Lorelai and apologizes for disappointing her and admits she feels terrible for leaving the way she did and sleeping with a married guy. Rory asks Lorelai for a favor, which is getting a letter she wrote to Dean to him while she is still in Europe because she has to fix it right then and there. So, I’m guessing she overnights the letter or something because Lorelai checks her mail the next day and it’s there. The magic of TV!
Anywho, Lorelai delivers the letter to Dean and of course he starts bombarding her with questions about “Where is Rory? Why did she go to Europe? Who did she go with” and Lorelai just tells him to read the letter. Later in that same episode, Lorelai & Sookie are walking past Dean’s apartment and his wife is throwing all of his things out the window and telling him to leave because she found the note, thus finding out that Dean cheated. Skip ahead about an hour or so, Rory pops up from being in Europe, and as her and Lorelai are walking to get some lunch, Dean’s wife & mother-in-law run into Rory and Lorelai and the mother-in-law totally goes off on Rory, blaming her for breaking apart a marriage and calls her a monster.
This is the part that gets me. Rory and Lorelai then go to Luke’s Diner and act like nothing is wrong. My question is how could the writers make the situation be so nonchalant? I mean, cheating on your spouse is terrible but cheating with someone you KNOW is married, which causes their marriage to break up is just as bad. How could Rory just walk into Luke’s Diner and order a root beer like it’s just a normal day. She’s smiling, laughing, talking with her friend Lane.
Ok, sorry for the long post lol I had to get that off my chest!
